Die Marktgemeinde Wagrain, reizvoller Gebirgsort am Eingang des Kleinarltales, war über 50 Jahre Heimat des Dichters Karl Heinrich Waggerl. Karl Heinrich Waggerl gehört zu den wichtigsten österreichischen Schriftstellern. Sein dichterisches Werk ist eng mit der Beschreibung seiner engeren Heimat und mit Wagrain verbunden. 1897 in ärmlichen Verhältnissen in Bad Gastein geboren, zog er bereits 1920 mit seiner Frau Edith als Lehrer nach Wagrain. Vom Beginn an bis zu seinem Tod 1973 lebte er im „Waggerl Haus“, das bereits im Jahre 1776 erstmals urkundlich erwähnt wurde und in dem auch sein literarischen Werke entstanden. Durch eine Schenkung von Edith Waggerl (+ 1990) wurde es der Marktgemeinde Wagrain möglich, das Haus gemeinsam mit dem Team des Wagrainer Kulturvereins „Blaues Fenster“ und mit Wissenschaftern als Museum umzugestalten und 1994 zu eröffnen. Die wichtigsten Räume sind so belassen, wie Waggerl sie bewohnt hat. Im ganzen Haus sind Beispiele der kunsthandwerklichen Tätigkeiten Waggerls des Buchbinders, Malers, Zeichners, Fotografen und Sammlers zu sehen. In einigen Nebenräumen wurden Informationstafeln, Vitrinen, drei Hörstationen und ein Videofilm eingerichtet, die sich mit der Person und dem Werk kritisch und informativ beschäftigen. Das Museum soll ein Ort des Kennenlernens, des Wiedersehens und der Auseinandersetzung mit dem Dichter sein. Darüber hinaus enthält es auch Aspekte eines "Heimatmuseums", da ja der Begriff "Heimat" für Waggerls Werk zentral war.
